A Match Made at Madras: Margaret Maskelyne by Dr. John A Thomas

Overview

Armed with just a marriage register entry dated 18 February 1753 stating that Robert Clive had been married to Margaret Maskelyne at St. Mary’s Church at Fort St. George, Madras, the author set out to find out who she was. She had been orphaned at the age of eight and belonged to a well educated, closely knit although somewhat impoverished middle class family of Wiltshire, England. She had never even seen the sea prior to sailing to India on the East Indiaman Godolphin at the age of sixteen.

Full Description

Her first sighting of India was Madras Roads. She found living with the transplanted, small nascent British-Indian community, a pleasant change. She married Robert Clive and became a mother to his many children. From being the wife of the Deputy Governor of Pondicherry she found herself rising with her husband to become the wife of the Governor of Calcutta. Margaret found coping with the life style that she was unused to, challenging. Minor jealousies fomented by his detractors caused the British Parliament to investigate the matter of maladministration. Clive was exonerated. He was nevertheless considerably irked by this. The 49 year old Clive was found dead suspected to have committed suicide. The 21 years of marriage thus ended on 22 November 1774. Margaret, however, lived on to the age of 82 with her eldest son Edward at Oakly Park at Ludlow in Shropshire. Although many of her children died early, she was to witness her eldest son become Governor of Madras in 1798
