Dr.J.Subramani graduated from the University of Madras, one of the oldest and prestigious universities in India. He has made several innovative contributions to the development of science and technology particularly in the field of Statistics, Mathematics and Quality Management Systems implementation. His contribution towards the minimum variance quadratic unbiased estimation introduced by the world renowned statistician Prof. C.R. Rao has made the method more adaptive and applicable to real life problems. Further the development of non-iterative least squares method for estimation of several missing values and the explicit expressions given for several standard experimental designs have made the analysis and interpretation of the experimental data with missing values simple and elegant to apply for real life problems arising in the field of agricultural; medical and biological experiments. His understanding of quality problems while predicting the process capability has made him to introduce two new sampling schemes namely Determinant Sampling and Diagonal Systematic Sampling. These sampling schemes perform better than the usual simple random sampling and systematic sampling for estimating the mean of finite populations. His involvement in the training and implementing the quality systems at Rane TRW Steering Systems limited has made a significant achievement in understanding the TQM movement which resulted in, six of its group companies have received the Deming Prize. For his academic excellence he has received several awards including the prestigious National and International Young Statistician awards instituted respectively by the Indian Society of Probability and Statistics and the International Statistical Institute, The Netherlands. Further he has published more than 50 research papers in reputed journals from India, USA, UK, Germany, Italy, Brazil, The Netherlands etc. He has more than two decades of professional experience both in industries and academic institutions. He has not only concentrated and contributed to his research fields and his employments but also has taken keen interests in serving the community from his childhood onwards. He has actively participated in the National Service Scheme and also in several community service organizations. As a growing person he has joined in the movement of LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL and served for the poor and needy people by spending his own money and time. His tireless efforts have made him to be the Secretary, the President and District Chairman and have received the Best Secretary, Best President and Best District Chairman awards. To make his learning and contributions to be more useful he has founded the “Tamil Nadu Statistical Association” a professional society to promote statistical thinking among the government and non government employees. From this banner he has organized several seminars, conferences and short term programs to popularize the need of Quality and application of statistics in all walks of life. In recent times he is concentrating on “Effective Teaching of Mathematics” through mathematical modeling and recreational mathematics (Mathematical Puzzles and Games). His concepts and ideas have been received very well by the participants. He has organized several Mathematical Exhibitions to promote interests in mathematics among the students and youngsters, which are seen by several hundred students and public and are appreciated by them. Later several college and schools invited Dr.J.Subramani to deliver lectures on his new innovative ideas on teaching of mathematics through recreational mathematics. This helped several hundreds of students to overcome from math phobia. It is right to say the maxim “Where there is a will there is a way”, the will is there and he got the way. His wit and intelligence is ultimately revealed by his untiring and ceaseless efforts in creating and solving the brain storming puzzles.
