Peter Shaw was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was the son of Robert Godlonton-Shaw, a barrister and Latin scholar and Beatrice Ida Simpson, a well known concert pianist. At the age of 14 Peter was enrolled in a naval training centre and educated on the Training Ship General Botha. At 16 he joined the Merchant Navy as a cadet officer and spent the next 9 years sailing around the world. During this time a magazine called True Stories found its way into his cabin. Peter decided to submit a story which was accepted and eventually 4 more stories found their way onto the pages of
True Stories magazine. Finally he “swallowed the anchor”, got married and came ashore where he joined the national newspaper as a cub reporter where he learned to write obituaries. Finally he left to become a freelance journalist but was forced to join the real world and obtained a diploma in Sales Strategy and Market research.
His writing became an enjoyable hobby until he was able to resume writing on a full time basis. The influence of his early writing of True Stories is clearly illustrated in his stories by their association with reality and accuracy of facts
